12 Tags of 2012 - October

It's that time again - Timmy time!  No, not Shaun the Sheep Timmy but one of my favourite crafters - Tim Holtz. His tag for this month is a fabulous tribute to Halloween - which all of the US crafters have been showing off but which just doesn't fly here yet (see what I did there, wink wink).

So, I decided that since it is Spring here (well, I think it is although the weather doesn't seem to agree), that should be my theme.  Here is the finished tag:

I don't often use my own hand writing because like most of us, I don't like it!  But, I had a photo that I needed for Fat Mum Slim's October Photo a Day and I know that you should try to capture your own writing as often as possible, so I did.  I combined some Dyan Reaveley techniques here too and I am very happy with the out come.  So, how did I do it?

First, please make sure you go and show T!m some love.  His tutorials are always so well done and informative and I wouldn't be able to do half the stuff I do without watching his videos and following his blog.  My challenge this time was to create the tissue paper that he has in his line because I haven't gotten around to purchasing any (although as usual, I want to)!  I used two sheets of regular tissue paper that I stamped on with Archival Ink in Jet Black and glued together and this is the result:

I ended up choosing the script paper as I just wasn't happy with the memories stamped one.  So I adhered it to the tag as per T!m's instructions.

I glued it down with the wrinkles then painted it with acrylic paints in a pale green, yellow and blue, wiping with a baby wipe as I went along.  

Then I added the black acrylic paint around the edges, wiping with a baby wipe.  I did find here that the tissue paper was getting very fragile so I needed to be VERY gentle.

I added Tumbled Glass, Scattered Straw and Bundled Sage Distress Inks over the top.

Next, I stamped using Archival Ink in Jet Black.  The bottom stamp is a KaiserCraft Stamp and the stamp at the top is a Hero Arts.

To finish the background, I sprayed it with Heirloom Gold Perfect Pearls Mist - I love that shimmer!

I die cut the bird (Caged Bird Bigz Die) from grunge paper using my Vagabond and painted it with Snow Cap paint dabber before I added glitter (see how to make your own coloured glitter with Ranger's Dry Glitter on T!m's blog - using my other favourite - Alcohol Ink!).

Here's the glittered bird.  I added the wing later (using the Alcohol Ink Gold Mixative to colour the glitter) and inked the branch and legs with Gathering Twigs Distress Ink.

Finally, I die cut some leaves using the Mini Branch and Leaf Movers and Shapers set and the sentiments shape from the Mini Labels Movers and Shapers.  I inked them with Distress Ink and wrote out the quote and adhered it with foam tape.  I traced around both the die cut and stamped leaves with and Inkssentials Opaque Pen in white too.  The bird was glued directly to the tag using Scotch Quick Dry Adhesive.  My ribbon was a piece of cord from some clothes I bought the boys for summer!

June Card Class Project - A Photo Wallet

Hey everyone! Hope this frosty morning finds you all well.

I've posted this project before but I wanted to share again - including what we are making for the class. This project was sourced from Splitcoaststampers. It's a really simple way to share a few photos with friends and family.

So here are the two different versions we are making this month.









The second version:






The flower on the front came from Paper Loves Glue. It's super easy and soooo effective! Here is a side on photo to give you an idea of the dimension:



You will also notice I chose to go with a Velcro fastener and not a belly band. I found that the band kind of takes over if you are using patterned paper.

The projects are made using KaiserCraft and Prima papers. I used Stampin' Up and Distress ink to ink the edges of the paper and stamp the sentiments. Stamps are from Hero Arts, Bo Bunny and KaiserCraft.

Alcohol Ink Cards and EXCITING NEWS

Oh yes, I went there...finally!  I have been wanting to get these inks for AGES but just haven't done it due to cost or because there were other things I wanted more.  So, when I got a gift card for Christmas, I decided to buy the lot of 23 that I had my eye on in an Etsy store.  It included two of the fixatives (gold and silver) and then I ordered the other items I needed from SimonSaysStamp who are a fantastic site to purchase from.  Contrary to what some of my friends wish - these are not for drinking or licking!  I do suggest that you work in a well ventilated area though!

On Monday, I finally had the chance and the energy to try them!  Here are the results:

(Materials used:  DCWV Cardstock, Gold Glitter Paper, Ranger Archival Ink in Plum, Rhinestones, Vintage Treasures Scrapbooking Dazzles, Plastic packaging, Time Holtz Sizzix Springtime Backgrounds and Borders Texture Fade, Glue Arts Glue Glider Pro, hot glue, Staz On Ink in Jet Black, Tim Holtz Sizzix Die Mini Butterflies Movers and Shapers, Alcohol Inks in Cranberry, Red Pepper, Watermelon, Gold, Butterscotch, Sunshine Yellow and Sunset Orange, Adirondack Alcohol Ink Cardstock, Hero Arts/Sizzix Stamps and Die Cut Message Frames, Gold Twine)

The purple card was done using a clear embossable acetate from Sparkle and Sprinkle while the red card was done using Adirondack Alcohol Ink Cardstock.  You will need some form of glossy or slick surface to use these on but they have SOOOOO many applications.  Here is a video from the guru himself about how to use them:

 He tells you just about everything you need to know about these amazing inks in this video.  There are many great videos on YouTube about Alcohol Inks as well if you search for them.  I can also recommend Scrap Time as a fabulous site for videos too.  Sorry I didn't have any step by step photos this time!  I was just to excited to remember :)

What is this EXCITING NEWS I hear you say!  Well, if you didn't see it on my FB feed - I've been published!!!  Scrapbook Creations Issue 91 has a two page layout with one of my cards!  I am beyond excited and very honoured that they chose one of my creations.  I would have been jumping out of my skin for just a gallery shot but to have the two pages is more than I could have hoped for.

So run out and get a copy.  If you live close by, I'll autograph it for you ;0)  You never know, it might be worth something some day!  Here's the cover of the issue it's in too:

6 Fold Card

Each Wednesday, I get an email from SplitCoastStampers with a new tutorial.  When I saw this one, I just had to try it out.  Again, it's not as hard as I first thought although I felt I had to watch the video that is at the bottom of the tutorial page.  I am not going to repeat the tutorial but here is the link to the 6 Fold Card.

I chose to use the Kaisercraft Gypsy papers and embellishments.  The butterflies are Hero Arts stamps teamed with Sizzix framelit dies which were coloured with Smooch Accent Inks.  This is what mine looked like finished:

This is the closed front.  The butterfly was also sprayed with Perfect Pearls Mist in Heirloom Gold, edged with VersaColor Ink in Gold and then coated with Dimensional Magic and Diamond Stickles.  The ribbon is a random piece from my stash while the central medallion is part of the Kaisercraft Gypsy Chipboard embellishments.  This was sanded, inked (Distress Ink Vintage Photo) and sprayed with the Heirloom Gold.  The paper was inked with  Vintage Photo too.

First and second folds open.  The flowers and brads were inked with Vintage Photo and Gold and are from the KaiserCraft Gypsy collection.  The base paper was from DCWV brights card stock stack.

With the forth and fifth folds open.  The small butterfly was attached with foam tape.  The brads are ones I've had for ages and the thread is Memory Thread from DMC.  The centre panel is Very Vanilla card stock from Stampin' Up that was inked with Vintage Photo.

Completely open now.  The bottom greeting was stamped on Very Vanilla with Ranger Archival Ink in Plum and then inked with Vintage Photo (as were the butterflies).  The tag stamp is from Hero Arts teamed with a matching Sizzix Framelit die.  The word is from a set of Stamp It stamps I bought years ago.

All of the papers were inked with Vintage Photo but unless you see what it looked like before, it seems kind of meaningless.  So, here they are side by side:

As you can see, the act of inking has changed the look of these papers substantially.  It tones down those colours that might be too bright for you.  Give it a try on one of those pieces that you love the pattern on but just can't get past the colour now.  Also, for some reason, the colours in my photos are not accurate this time.  The card stock is more green and the pinky red centre piece is actually more burgundy as is the ribbon.  Grrrrrr...you would think I'd have that sorted by now huh?!

Oh, I thought this could be our first class project too!  Obviously, different papers and colours (ooooo, need to go shopping).  I won't have a class in January so am looking at a February date.  Need to schedule around birthdays and classes of others that I attend so will get back to you soon with the date.

And now onto the January colour challenge by Paper Secrets!  I hope to have a scrapbook page for you soon.
